I could have come up with a catchy title, but I just like reading that one. I hope I get to use it again in about a week and a half. Today the Boilers came out and set the tone early again Indiana. They came out of the gate playing tough defense. They used some key turnovers to take an early 11-2 lead. Drey Mingo was a huge part of that run scoring seven points including a nice rebound, put back, and foul shot for a three point play on the first possession. Drey finished the game with sixteen points, and had a very good day.
Another part of that early run was Dee Dee Williams. She was playing tough D and really seemed to have a nose for the ball. She is really improving as the season moves on. That is what you want to see out of your true freshmen. Her offense still is not there, but if she can shut down her opponent I will take it.
Brittany Rayburn used a strong second half to propel her to 17 points on the night. What might get lost by looking at her point total was the fact that she had a career high six steals. When I heard that on the radio I thought of how disruptive she really was. I can think of a few instances where her tip resulted in a steal for a fellow Boiler. She is a tough player that is playing hurt right now. She did not show it today.
Alex Guyton was the fourth Boiler in double figures today with 11. At times she can be a force under the basket. When paired with Drey they form a nice combo underneath. Alex’s quick hands tend to get some loose balls from guards that think they are blowing by her. Anotinette Howard only had two points on the night, but they were dramatic for sure. With the shot clock winding down and everyone in the arena yelling for her to shoot she calmly dribbled to the top of the key before draining a shot that left her hand at the last second. That was one of many buzzer beaters for the Boilers today.
The 71-57 win by the Boilers gave them the season sweep of the Hoosiers. There are a few goals that you would like to see the Boilers achieve every season. One of them for me is to beat IU, and they have done that this season. Now on to the Big Ten title! They have a good shot to make a case that they belong in the equation when they take on #20 Iowa Thursday night in Mackey. I will be there unless this talk of a blizzard is for real.
One thing that I would like to mention before I go as well. The Gold and Black Sound (GABS) comes to every game ready to have a good time and keep the crowd in the game. They really are part of the fun of attending a women’s game at Mackey. Today though they topped themselves. No I am not talking about the male member of the band dressed up as the Golden Girl. I will start therapy for that this week. In the second half they started making dribbling noises every time the ball hit the ground when a Hoosier was dribbling it. At first we thought they were just doing it to one player, but then found out they were doing it for everyone. It really seemed to be getting into the Hoosiers heads at first. It also looked like GABS was having some fun doing it as well. Keep it up guys!
Play of the game – There were a lot of solid plays today by Purdue. The play I picked for the play of the game though came about halfway through the first half. After a nice entry feed by Chantel Poston, Sam Ostarello made a beautiful two handed behind the back pass to Antoinette Howard who was crashing to the basket. Howard took the pass and fed a wide open Drey Mingo after four Hoosiers had crashed on Howard. I picked this play because of the great passing as well as the unselfish play of all involved. Plays like this will get you wins in this league.
Gameball – It seems like I forgot to talk about someone. At halftime I really thought that this was going to Drey. She was having a great game, and was the reason the Boilers were up at that point. That is before Courtney Moses put on a show in the second half. She finished the game with a game high 23 points. She got the bulk of those with her deadeye shooting from behind the arc. At one point late in the game after an IU run she seemed to carry us. She just could not miss. She really knows the game. She makes good passes for the most part as well. Part of knowing the game is positioning. In the first half on a break with Rayburn she used the rim to her advantage to avoid getting blocked. She just does a lot of things right. This is a true freshman folks. Next season with KK back at point Moses will be tough. What am I saying, she is tough now. What makes the late shooting so impressive is how tough she plays defense all game. I could understand it if she was a little tired late, and the shots were off. She must just run constantly in between games. This was a team win, but the head of that class today was Courtney.
