Today is April 15th. To most people it is known as a horrible day because their taxes are due. To me and most baseball fans it has another meaning. Today is the day that Jackie Robinson played his first game for the Dodgers in 1947. In 1997 his number was retired throughout baseball. The picture to the left shows how it was displayed in South Bend at the turn of the century. They have since changed the configuration, but he still has his number on the outfield wall. Jackie opened the door to many. Could you imagine baseball without Willie Mays? Willie Stargell? Willie Harris? Alright, maybe not Willie Harris. Although he did score the run that won the Sox the Series in ’05 on a ground ball hit by Jermaine Dye. So thanks Jackie for all that you did for baseball, and helping the White Sox win the World Series in 2005.
