Today’s card is the 1991 Topps card of Carlton. I like this card because it shows Carlton receiving the ball with Cecil Fielder bearing down on him. As you can see by his stance Carlton is not blocking the plate. Early in his career he blocked the plate like most catchers. That even led to a couple of brawls. In June 1974 he was injured blocking the plate, and missed the rest of the season because of it. When he did get back behind the plate he started using the swipe tag that most catchers use today. You stand in front of the plate much like a first baseman would, and you swipe back at the runner. With people like Cecil Fielder bearing down on you can you blame him? He may be soft, but he would still be a load coming at you. Maybe his altered style of catching helped him stay around a little longer.
