Notre Dame 62 – Pittsburgh 59

The Notre Dame women opened up the NCAA Tournament today in Pittsburgh. They are the #9 seed against #8 Cal. The team has overachieved all year long, so why should they stop now. Part of the reason for the success of the Irish this year is the play of the three freshmen. They really helped the team today. Charel Allen was not her usual self today so the Irish needed the freshmen to step up. They kept the Irish in the game with scoring, rebounding, and defense. All three were named to the Big East All-Freshman team. The Irish had a 7 point lead with less than two minutes remaining, but saw the lead dwindle to two Lechlitner missed the front end of a one and one that gave Cal a chance, but they turned the ball over. Tulyah Gaines (pictured) hit two free throws with 16.5 seconds remaining to give the Irish a 4 point lead. Greif was fouled while shooting a three and made all three to get the game to within one. Lechlitner then took the ball and dribbled until the clock was down to .5 seconds before getting fouled. She sank both of her threes to seal the first round win for the Irish. The Irish will most likely play #1 North Carolina on Tuesday.
One of the great quotes from the announcers during the game was “she is Jewish, but her family operates a Christmas tree farm” when talking about Cal player Greif. I think they are just sitting there praying they can use some of these tidbits in the game. It almost seems like a comedian setting up his own jokes.
